Science-Backed Health Benefits Of Marijuana

Descriptive statistics were used to characterize the social media business pages of the recreational marijuana companies. Companies often repeated previous posts during workday hours. In addition, to understand whether the presence of the required WAC warnings reduced the engagement of users with these marijuana business posts, we tested whether social media posts with WAC warnings had decreased the endorsement of users (via Likes/Favorites and Shares/Retweets) compared with social media posts without WAC warnings. These WAC regulations informed coding to identify marijuana business posts that represented endorsement of (1) overconsumption, (2) curative or therapeutic benefits, and (3) appeal to youths; as well as the identification of warnings (4) of the product’s intoxicating effects, (5) of avoiding driving while using marijuana, (6) of health risks, and (7) of product use limited for people older than 21 years. The oncologists I’ve talked with about its use are more comfortable discussing marijuana with patients now than they used to be. It is alarming that no studies have been conducted until now to look into the long-term impact of cannabis use on the cardiovascular system, observes Reece. Despite a growing evidence base, many questions still remain regarding the health risks and benefits of marijuana. For WAC regulations regarding warnings, we calculated the frequency of posts with all 4 warnings as well as overall frequency of any warning for the overall sample, and for each individual marijuana company. It is unclear whether businesses follow these WAC regulations in their presence on social media. For marijuana businesses not included in this research, we conducted pilot coding to test and refine the codebook to represent the key elements of the WAC regulations. In a series of 5 groups, we asked 32 adolescents (15-20 years of age) who were social media users to review our codebook and conduct content analysis on 12 posts representing WAC coding categories. For each WAC regulation category, we calculated the frequency of posts representing that category for our overall sample, as well as for each individual marijuana company. The 2015 WAC regulations stated that marijuana companies cannot advertise using language that promotes overconsumption of marijuana; that describes its curative or therapeutic benefits; or that is designed to appeal to youths.9-11 Messages must include warnings about the risks of intoxication; about driving under the influence of marijuana; about health risks from using marijuana; and about prohibiting underage use.

Pharmaceutical companies are currently directing research that will utilize what we have learned from cannabinoids in order to produce better pain control. These criminal defense lawyers are not only by law obligated to produce. Data for this study were obtained from 2 social media platforms, Facebook and Twitter, which are among the most popular social media sites for both youths and businesses using social media.13 We initially identified potential marijuana businesses using several approaches, including searching on Facebook, Twitter, and the marijuana business locator website Weedmaps.19 We then determined whether the business was present on both Facebook and Twitter. We identified 38 recreational marijuana businesses in Washington with a social media presence on Facebook or Twitter. Our goal was to understand the breadth of WAC-related content posted by marijuana businesses. If so, we evaluated the following inclusion criteria: (1) the business focused on retail recreational marijuana products; (2) the business was located in the state of Washington with the goal of 1 business per city or town; and (3) the business has maintained both social media profiles since 2015, thus a full year of content was available. Currently, the law supporting it has been entered into full force. Currently, the growers have only put three different strains of flower on the shelves, but say more varieties are on the way.

A limitation of the study is the categorization of county-level marijuana policy into three groups. The gradient of local marijuana policy is more nuanced than these three categories because some counties allowing all types of marijuana facilities also have restrictive zoning conditions, limit the maximum number of facilities, or limit acreage for cultivation or processing facilities. The effects of the policy changes are not yet fully known, and the research struggles to keep up with a rapidly changing marijuana landscape. It should be kept out of the hands of children, pregnant women and those who are at risk for worse side effects. Be good. Check out all our resources. His voice rising in a crescendo Gray laid out the scenario in which, he claims, Potter found herself - with Wright repeatedly resisting, fighting attempts to apprehend him, ignoring her warnings, 'I'm going to tase you… Of note, the lower percentage in Washington may be partially explained by Washington's merger of recreational and medical marijuana markets in 2015.13 The proportion of counties in Colorado with prohibitions was also greater than that found in a policy surveillance study from California.6 Our results add to existing reports that numerous counties are opting to prohibit recreational marijuana facilities in states where recreational marijuana can be legally purchased and consumed (range: 23.1%-48.4% of counties in a state).

Our findings add to existing literature that suggests state marijuana legalization policies are nuanced and complex, varying at the local level.3 Our policy change results highlight the importance of ongoing policy surveillance research to examine changes to local marijuana policy over time. Future work should further explore how county policymakers balance local-level politics and perspectives (e.g., residential complaints, economic issues, public opinion) with state policy directives and policies over time. Our county-level recreational marijuana policy surveillance study reveals a patchwork of local policies in place by 2019 in the two earliest states to legalize recreational marijuana. As a medical marijuana physician who's been practicing for almost two decades now, have you noticed any changes in the questions you're asked by new patients over the years? Marijuana is an easily cultivated psychoactive plant that has been used ceremonially, recreationally, and medicinally for thousands of years. We found that nearly half (48.4%) of Colorado counties had prohibited all types of marijuana facilities by the end of our study period. However, nearly half of the 52 side-effects noted in the questionnaire were statistically associated with marijuana use.
